Tri-Nations Internationals

The Tri Nations is an international rugby union competition that is contested annually by Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The competition is organized by SANZAR, a consortium formed by the three countries' rugby governing bodies – the Australian Rugby Union, the New Zealand Rugby Union and the South African Rugby Union. These three teams have dominated international rankings in recent years and some consider the Tri Nations to be the toughest competition in international rugby. The Tri Nations will become the Four Nations in 2012 should the inclusion of Argentina as the fourth team go ahead. Argentina has been invited to join but there are a number of conditions that they have to fulfill. The series is played on a home-and-away basis. From the first tournament in 1996 through 2005, the three teams played each other twice. Since then, each team has played the others three times, except in the Rugby World Cup year of 2007 when the series reverted to a double round-robin. Since the inception of the series the games played between Australia and New Zealand also go toward determining the winner of the Bledisloe Cup each year. The Freedom Cup is contested between New Zealand and South Africa, and the Mandela Challenge Plate between Australia and South Africa.

South Africa

The South African national rugby union team (the Springboks) are the current holders of the Rugby World Cup and the Tri-Nations Championship. They are ranked number two in the IRB World Rankings as of 20 January 2010. They were named 2008 Team of the Year at the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards. As of 23 October 2009, the Springboks were holders of every major trophy available to them: the World Cup, the Tri-Nations, Nelson Mandela Plate, Freedom Cup and British and Irish Lions Series Winners.

Although South Africa was instrumental in the creation of the Rugby World Cup competition, the Springboks did not compete in the first two World Cups in 1987 and 1991 because of anti-apartheid sporting boycotts of South Africa. The team made its World Cup debut in 1995, when the newly democratic South Africa hosted the tournament. The Springboks then defeated the All Blacks 15-12 in the final, which is now remembered as one of the greatest moments in South Africa's sporting history, and a watershed moment in the post-Apartheid nation-building process. South Africa regained their title as champions 12 years later, when they defeated England 15–6 in the 2007 final. As a result of the 2007 World Cup tournament, the Springboks were promoted to first place in the IRB World Rankings.

The Springboks play in green and gold jerseys, and their emblems are the Springbok and the Protea. The side have been playing international rugby since 1891, when a British Isles side toured the nation, playing South Africa in their first Test on 30 July. South Africa is currently coached by Peter de Villiers, after Jake White, who led the Boks to the 2007 World Cup title, announced his resignation effective at the end of 2007. The current captain is John Smit, who was returned to his traditional position of hooker effective with the Boks' last 2009 Test against Ireland after having been moved to tighthead prop for the 2008 end of year tests, and spending the next 12 months in that position.

New Zealand invoked memories of past encounters with South
Africa to produce a superbly controlled and aggressive
performance and record a 32-12 victory.

The All Blacks, who had lost their three previous
encounters against the world champions, soaked up wave after

their quest to recapture the Tri-Nations crown from the
Springboks.

The All Blacks, who have not lost at the stadium in
Auckland since 1994, scored tries through centres Conrad Smith,
Ma'a Nonu, number eight Kieran Read and prop Tony Woodcock.
Flyhalf Daniel Carter added three conversions and two
penalties.

South Africa flyhalf Morne Steyn slotted four penalties for
the world champions, who have not won at the ground since 1937,

The Gold Coast Titans are an Australian professional rugby league football club based on the Gold Coast in Queensland. They compete in Australasia's elite rugby league competition, the National Rugby League (NRL) premiership.

They are the newest of the sixteen clubs, having commenced their inaugural season on March 18, 2007. Since 2008, the Titans have played their home games out of Robina's Skilled Park.

The Titans are the second top-level rugby league club to have been based on the Gold Coast, the first being the ill-fated Gold Coast Giants/Seagulls/Chargers, which existed from 1988 to 1998. The re-introduction of a Gold Coast-based team since the Chargers were cut from the NRL competition at the close of the Super League war has been viewed as highly successful and the Titans' case is often used in arguments by those in favour of the re-expansion of Australasia's competition.

The Brisbane Broncos are an Australian professional rugby league football club based in the city of Brisbane, the capital of the state of Queensland. Founded in 1988, the Broncos play in Australasia's elite competition, the National Rugby League (NRL) premiership. They have won five premierships in the ARL / NRL Premiership and were winners of the only breakaway Super League competition in 1997. The Broncos have also achieved four minor premierships during their twenty-two years in competition, making them the League's most successful club over the past two decades. Brisbane have never been defeated in a grand final and, since 1991, have never failed to qualify for the finals. The club has one of the largest fan bases in Australia and has the highest average attendance of any rugby club in the world 34,587 in the 2009 NRL season. The club records the highest annual revenue of all NRL clubs and has been named Australia's most popular and most watched football team of any code.

The club was founded in 1988 as part of the Winfield Cup's national expansion, becoming, along with the Gold Coast-Tweed Giants, one of Queensland's first two participants in the New South Wales Rugby League premiership. The Broncos later became a dominant force in that competition before playing a significant role in the Super League War of the mid-1990s, then continuing to compete successfully in the reunified National Rugby League competition of today.

The club was formed in 1908 as one of the founding members of the New South Wales Rugby Football League, Australia's first governing body for the sport and predecessor of the current National Rugby League. They are one of only two foundation clubs still present in the league, the other being the Sydney Roosters.

The Rabbitohs' traditional heartland covers the once-typically working class suburbs of inner-south and south eastern Sydney, however they have long held a wide supporter base spread all over New South Wales. The team's home ground is currently ANZ Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park.

Saint George Dragons Logo.png

The St George Dragons are an Australian rugby league club that has, since 1999, formed a joint venture St. George Illawarra Dragons team of the National Rugby League. St George are still represented as a stand alone entity at a junior level, with teams representing the district in the Harold Matthews Cup (under 16's) and the S.G. Ball Cup (under 18's). The St.George Dragons are the senior partner in the St.George-Illawarra Dragons partnership and assumed control of the Illawarra region following the complete demise of the Illawarra Steelers.

Entering the New South Wales Rugby Football League in 1921, the St. George club won 15 premierships, including 11 in succession between 1956 and 1966, a record for sporting competitions at the time. The Dragons thus became second to only the South Sydney Rabbitohs in terms of total premierships won in the NSW Rugby Football League. Following the Super League war and formation of the NRL, the club took over the Illawarra Steelers in 1998, forming the St. George Illawarra Dragons. The new St.George entity first fielded a side in the NRL competition in 1999, and that year also reached the grand final.
